SCAR THERAPY for Healing and Recovery

At Aspire Physiotherapy, we understand that healing after cancer treatment is more than physical—it’s emotional and functional too. Our Restore Scar Therapy is an integral part of our Cancer Rehabilitation Bunbury program, designed to support recovery from surgery, injury, and trauma.

What Is Scar Therapy?

After an injury or surgery, your body forms scar tissue as part of the healing process. Unfortunately, this tissue is often fibrotic, less mobile, and prone to forming adhesions—where layers beneath the skin stick together, limiting movement and function.

Restore Scar Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive physical therapy method. It helps reduce adhesions, fibrosis, and pain, while improving tissue quality. This therapy is a valuable component of cancer rehabilitation—especially for clients recovering from mastectomy, lymph node removal, abdominal surgery, or radiation-related scarring.

Self-Care Tips for Scar Recovery

Early Healing

Watch for signs of infection—redness, heat, rash, fever, or nausea. Contact your medical provider if these occur.

Moisturising

Once your scabs are gone, moisturise your scar 2–3 times daily with a cream, oil, or gel. This helps restore skin barrier function and reduces excessive scar tissue development.

Scar Massage

As soon as the scar is ready, begin gentle massage. Spend 3–5 minutes once or twice daily to soften the scar. Never massage so hard that it causes pain or inflammation.

Sun Protection

Use a high SPF on all exposed scars until full healing—this can take up to 2 years.

Keloid or Hypertrophic Scars

If your scar grows in height or width, start silicone gel, sheets, or compression therapy. Consistent use is essential to see results.

Aftercare and Emotional Support

Changes in your scar might be immediate or appear in the days following treatment. Some clients need multiple sessions for noticeable results.

Mild discomfort after treatment can occur, but increasing or persistent pain, or swelling, should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Talking through your cancer experience and receiving compassionate, therapeutic touch may bring up emotions. This is a normal and valid part of the healing journey.
